Sequencing

Originating from the Greek term "diptycha" for "two-fold," diptychs have a rich history in ancient art, serving as portable altarpieces in the Middle Ages and gaining Renaissance prominence through artists like Hans Memling. In contemporary times, diptychs, transcending religious contexts, are embraced by photographers and visual artists for dynamic storytelling. Triptychs, rooted in "triptycha" or "three-fold," extend this tradition, providing an expanded canvas for creative expression. Both diptychs and triptychs remain versatile tools in contemporary art, enabling intricate storytelling and conveying complex ideas and emotions.

My initial approach centers around creatively capturing a primary subject, with a secondary goal of remaining open to unexpected elements that enrich the core narrative. Each angle becomes a potential portal into a distinctive facet, offering opportunities to emphasize intriguing details or highlight structural intricacies. The resulting sequences unfold not as concise frozen moments in time but as a natural cinematic series in form.

An illustrative example unfolded during a recent shoot at the Loudon, Tennessee railroad viaduct. Focusing on the bridge's portal, I discovered a weathered plywood piece deserving of a standalone photograph. A flattened Modelo beer can and a discarded cigarette butt, found at the same location, formed a serendipitous connection and became the elements of the resulting photograph, "Found No.1." This pairing of subjects is evident within the image above.

This discovery process has become a cherished aspect of my photography, akin to a treasure hunt where unexpected visual gems reveal themselves in unassuming places.
